I worked for an organization that blamed the economy of 2008 for their woes – after having lost 6 figures per MONTH for the previous two years (and not even having noticed for one of those years!)

You’re so right – and while we’re about it, have regular opening hours if you run a shop. If the shop isn’t open when people want to buy what you sell, they’ll go somewhere else.

No, seriously. I know of shops that don’t open regularly, where the owner complains that business is bad.

Yes! Yes! Fantastic!
I am a graphic designer based in a gorgeous Chicago neighborhood with tons of potential. Problem is, businesses keep failing left and right. One major thoroughfare has nothing but one closed business after the next. I want to tell them all to stand across the street from their businesses and see if THEIR signs are readable, whether their visibility is an issue (my asessment? yes, emphatically yes.)
This also applies to many of the people I graduated school with who either don’t have full time jobs or think its useless to try and go it alone. It aint the economy. Look on the internet and you’ll find a plethora of thriving design businesses that aren’t even that great. What are they doing that you’re not? Find out! Simple as that. Kinda.
In any case, I will be sharing this article. Its fantastic. Thanks.

Thanks, great advice, I am transitioning my business to hopefully bigger and better things. I have been trying/working on getting noticed more-I appreciate the keep trying advice-in the world of the web, it is trying and tweaking that does seem to make a difference.

Ha! I know I’m late to the commenting party, but I have a feeling I know exactly what store you’re talking about, in NE Portland…and you’re totally right. It was an invisible store. The store that’s there now certainly has not made the same mistake…screaming neon signage all over the windows! Perhaps they saw this post? ;)
