Sorry - Just realised how crazed that comment was. I was just really excited about affiliate marketing being used to support really ethical people/products/services/causes and it all came out in a rush.

Oooh, yes!

Also, it's a great ethical business solution. Let's say you have a book that is a Life Changer, and Your Right People would love it and benefit from it.

You can choose to "affiliate" with Amazon, or you might take a look at how they treat small presses and decide that you'd prefer to partner up with the actual author and/or the small press and/or an indy bookshop. And you can point out that you're really pleased to have the opportunity to support such a great small, independent business.

And it's a good way of sharing the lurve, because you can rave about a book/cd/dvd/product/service all you want, but if you don't show people where they can ACCESS it, they WILL go the quickest route, and that pretty much always means the huge chain stores.

And there's nothing wrong with being a huge chain store. It's just that the ethics bit can be enormously problematic.

When I am In Business For Real, I shall feel pretty good about pitching a partner programme to people whose stuff I was going to big up anyway.

So I'd better get content on that site. Good content that will be Of Use. That way I can get on with raving about Certain Products/Services.

thanks havi for being my go-to person on this..... i am so freaked out that someone will "throw a shoe" at me for not making the whole "partner" thing clear, or that when i make it clear i will only succeed in grossing them out..... really though, it isn't much different from having a retail shop which everyone grocks just fine.... no one would expect a retail shop to have NO mark-up and why would services be excluded? but still.... our public mindset has not adapted to the idea and so your fresh language (dare i say poetic) helps everything get differentiated...... i just became a powell's partner! and started a MamaMedicine shop - of other people and their stuff..... now to write a non-sleazy explanation.... i'll keep you posted...

I've always liked the idea of affiliate programs from the side of the person recommending it... even though I felt the "ew" factor when giving people affiliate links.

I'm really glad you chose to take on this topic Havi, it makes everything more clear and come from a "everyboby wins" point of view. Appreciation. It's good. :)

@Jennifer:
" I would have kept mentioning your stuff and you without making a dime.

That should be our criteria for recommending ANYTHING."

I could not agree more. I would pontificate on it, but you said everything that needed to be said.

Oh yes, it's a great post (again) Havi, but all I could think was: "Ooooooh, Selma's made an appearance and she's being all 'snarky teenager' and I love it!"

I recently purchased Itty Biz's online business school, and was thinking of what I could ethically sell affiliate style. This was a timely post. Thanks!
